"Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art."
- Ansel Adams

“I've never taken a photograph of someone and created a persona; I've just discovered what was already there.”
― Anthony Farrimond

You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again. You can also look at a picture for a second and think of it all your life.
-Joan Miro

“The most beautiful makeup of a woman is passion. But cosmetics are easier to buy.”
― Yves Saint Laurent

PREPARATION
What to Wear
-
Think about the purpose and reason you are getting a professional Headshot and match your clothing to that purpose. You wouldn’t wear a suit and tie if you are a football coach or plumber and conversely, you wouldn’t wear shorts and a t-shirt if you are a corporate attorney. Dress to your purpose.
-
Solid colors are best with minimal and simple patterns being ok
-
Decide, along with your Photographer, on what colors not to wear as to avoid blending in with the chosen background-color
-
Avoid turtlenecks as they create a squished look on the face
-
Have your clothes freshly cleaned and pressed
-
Let your Photographer know how many changes of clothes you want. This will help the Photographer time the shoot correctly.
-
Should you wear your glasses during a Headshot session? Well, the answer is probably yes especially if you wear them all the time. Afterall people may not as readily recognize you without them. The challenge is glare – reduce the chance by making sure to have them super clean. The Photographer can offer the same professional cleaning fluids that are used on his camera lenses. I get this from my Ophthalmologist. Glare is not easily removed in post-production. In either case, I usually take the images with and without glasses and along with the client choose the best results. You’ll have options!
HINT: "Consider getting an inexpensive pair of sunglasses or readers that mimic the look of your regular
glasses and pop the lenses out"...
-
Get rested the night before. A tired subject does translate into the results.
-
Avoid getting a haircut just before your photo shoot
-
Drink plenty of fluids to be well-hydrated
-
Once dressed keep clear of any pets – with modern super high-resolution cameras stray hairs are easily depicted
-
Headshots in Scottsdale North Phoenix provides no-cost editing to smooth out wrinkles, blemishes, whiten teeth, and other subtle adjustments. Let your photographer know if you don’t want these services.
-
Relax and make this a fun event and communicate any expectations you may have with your Photographer. Schedule enough time so that you are not feeling rushed.
-
Wear comfortable clothes, that fit well and that make you feel good and look your best.
HINT: "Bring your previous Headshots or sample
Headshots with you so we can get
your photoshoot dialed in"...
What to Wear - Men
-
The standard business look is a suit jacket, dress shirt, and tie
-
For a casual business look consider a jacket and no tie or a shirt and tie with no jacket or dress shirt on its own
-
Polo shirts are good when it specifically represents your workplace and culture
-
It's best to avoid the "Casual Friday" look. Dress at the higher level of formality normal for your workplace
-
Choose a shirt color that is generally darker than your skin tone
-
Avoid a plain white dress shirt when worn on its own
-
If possible, avoid wearing the same clothes you are wearing for the session in the car on the way over. Bring your clothes on a hanger and change after you arrive
-
Avoid shaving immediately before the session to minimize any skin irritation
What to Wear - Women
-
Avoid big prints and busy patterns - simple is better
-
For a no-jacket casual look, bring various colored blouses - ideally darker than your skin tone
-
The focus is placed on the face so be stylish and fashionable but don’t overdo it
-
Sleeveless tops and dresses can draw attention away from your face and should be avoided
-
Jewelry should be simple, small and non-distracting
-
Unless you wear multiple facial piercings in your work the best advice is to avoid them
-
Keep jewelry extremely simple - small is better. The idea is not to distract from your face
Note: "To avoid a “Shiny” face your photographer
will have matte powder available if needed...
Makeup

Matte lipstick achieves the best result, lip liner helps define lips. Don't overdo it
